In a large mixing bowl add flour, sugar, baking soda, baking powder, and salt and whisk them together. Then add in 1 cup(2 sticks) cold cubed butter and the shortening.

Use a pastry blender cutter or your fingers to cut the butter and shortening into the dry ingredients until they are about the size of a pea.

In a mixing cup, add the yeast into the warm water(105-110 degrees), and mix it into a paste.

Then in a medium mixing cup or bowl, whisk the yeast paste into the cold buttermilk. Then pour the buttermilk mixture into the flour mixture. Using a spatula mix them together until they are combined. Then use your fingers to mix in any lumps and form into a dough ball (the dough should have a sticky consistency).

On a lightly floured surface, pat out the dough until it is about an inch thick.  Then using a 2-inch biscuit cutter, cut out each biscuit and place them in a pre-greased cast-iron skillet (you may need a second skillet). Each biscuit should touch each other (this will make the biscuits rise taller in the skillet).
